Pr Martin Englund is the winner of the «International Prize Elise Jourdevant» of The Osteoarthritis Foundation.

Brussels, Belgium, October 18th, 2018.

The Osteoarthritis Foundation awarded the « International Prize Elise Jourdevant » to Prof. Englund (University of Lund, Sweden) in the presence of the Swedish Ambassador. This prize has rewarded the entire scientific career of the researcher.

The ceremony took place at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels and was followed by a piano recital given by the famous Belgian pianist Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, the Foundation's new patron.

It is in 1998 that the Prof. Englund graduated as a doctor of medicine in Sweden. A few years later, in 2004, he defended his doctoral thesis in orthopedics at the University of Lund (Sweden).

His work has highlighted the high risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knee after meniscal surgery.

Between 2005 and 2007, he completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Boston University School of Medicine (USA), where he also earned a Master's degree in Epidemiology.

Martin Englund has published numerous original articles in prestigious journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and Annals of Internal Medicine.

His research has demonstrated the presence in the osteoarthritic patient degenerative meniscal tears of the knee, not caused by trauma. This discovery has made it possible to position the meniscus as a major player in osteoarthritis of the knee.

Since returning to the University of Lund (Sweden) in 2007, Prof. Englund has set up and runs an interdisciplinary team (www.clinicalepidemiology.se) specializing in the treatment of osteoarthritis, a growing public health problem in an aging European population.
