Newsletter - January 2021

The Osteoarthritis Foundation wishes you a Happy New Year and invites you to discover the first Newsletter of 2021.
2020 was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. Osteoarthritis patients were particularly at risk, not only because they had comorbidities associated with severe forms of this infection, but also because they had limited access to their treatment (s) (e.g. physiotherapy, infiltrations ...). In addition, confinement has, for some of them, favored a sedentary lifestyle, physical deconditioning and weight gain. These changes are aggravating factors for the symptoms of osteoarthritis and have plunged many osteoarthritis patients into a vicious circle, sometimes leading to a deterioration in their health and further exposing them to the harms of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
To help patients, the Osteoarthritis Foundation has taken many initiatives in 2020:
  • The production of video capsules and descriptive sheets of physical exercises to maintain a good musculature and to fight against stiffening of the joints.
  • Writing articles for the general public in the general press (daily newspapers, magazines, information sites, etc.) as well as organizing and participating in conferences and webinars for patients and health professionals.
  • A communication campaign on the occasion of World Osteoarthritis Day (September 17th).
  • The presentation of the Jean Henrotin Research Prize in partnership with the Leon Fredericq Foundation.
  • The submission, in collaboration with more than forty researchers, industrialists and patient associations, of a COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) application for European funding, the aim of which is to create recommendations for future research in the field of osteoarthritis.
  • Participation in the "STOP ARTHROSE" survey aimed at determining the expectations, habits and beliefs of osteoarthritis patients. The results of this survey involving more than 3000 participants will be communicated in 2021.
  • Contribution also to a survey called "ALINA" on the link between patients' eating habits and the symptoms of osteoarthritis. This study began in 2020 and will be completed in 2023.
